Past Continuous Tense

पहचान : इस काल के, वाक्य के अंत मे रहा था, रही थी, रहे थे आदि शब्द आते है

Rules :

1. In past continuous tense, we use was or were and first form of the main verb with ing.

(Past continuous tense में, हम मुख्य क्रिया के उपयोग से पहले was/were का प्रयोग करते है)

Subject + was/were + first form (v) + ing + object.

2. When the subject is I, he, she, it or singular, we use was. [I was writing a letter then].

When the subject is you, we they or plural, we use were. [we were thinking over the problem quite seriously].

• I » Was
• Was » He, She, It, Name or singular.
• Were » you, we, they, or plural.

3. In negative sentences we put not between was/were and I form + ing. [Was not going/ were not going].

Subject + was/were + Not + first form (v) + ing + object.

4. In interrogative sentence was or were is placed before the subject.

Was/were + subject + first form (v) + ing + object?

5. In interrogative negative not is placed between subject and verb.

Was/ were + subject + not + first form (v) + ing + object?

Simple sentence

Subject +was/were + first form (v) + ing+object.

Examples

• वह अपने कमरे में सो रहा था
• He was sleeping in his room.
• हम उसका इंतजार कर रहे थे
• We were waiting for him.
• वह चाय बना रही थी
• She was preparing tea.
• मैं तुम्हारी चिंता कर रहा था
• I was worrying about you.

Negative sentence 

Subject + was/were + not + first form (v) + ing+object.

Examples 

• तुम वहाँ नहीं खड़े थे
• You were not standing there.
• वह नहीं लड़ रहा था
• He was not quarreling.
• मैं तुम्हारे बारे मे नहीं कहे रहा था
• I was not telling about you.
• वह टिकट नहीं बेच रहा था
• He was not selling the tickets.

Interrogative sentence

Was/were + Subject + first form (v) + ing+ Object?

Examples 

• क्या तुम कहानी लिख रहे थे?
• Was you writing a story?
• क्या वह मेरे बारे मे पूछ रहा था?
• Was he asking about me?
• क्या तुम फ़िल्म देख रहे थे?
• Was you watching movie?
• क्या वह मुझ पर हस रही थी?
• Was she laughing at me?

Negative -interrogative

Was/were + Subject + not + first form (v) + ing+ Object?

Examples

• क्या पक्षी उड़ नहीं रहे थे?
• Were the birds not flying?
• क्या वह काम नहीं कर रहा था?
• Was he not doing work?
• क्या वह समाचार पत्र नहीं पड़ रहा था?
• Was he not reding the newspaper?
• क्या चपरासी घंटी नहीं बजा रहा था?
• Was the peon not ringing the bell?

Wh family sentence

Wh family + Was/were + Subject + first form (v) + ing+ Object?

Examples 

• तुम क्यों रो रहे थे?
• Why were you weeping?
• तुम किसे बुला रहे थे?
• Whom were you calling?
• कल तुम वहाँ क्यों खड़े थे?
• Why were you standing there yesterday?
